Postponement Of The Great Swanage Spring Clean – A Message From Frank Roberts of Swanage Landers

Frank Roberts 2019

Swanage Landers is part of Litter Free Purbeck, which now brings six local groups together to address littering issues across Purbeck. During the ‘The Great Swanage Spring Clean’ (this weekend!) I hoped to encourage a community effort to look after our spaces. I encouraged many to consider ‘What could you safely do?’ by sweeping the front of where you live, tidying a communal area or maybe doing the same for a neighbour who is less able; or indeed offering refreshment for those who were helping out!
When this is all over, it would be great to welcome visitors back to our lovely town, all tidy and ready for businesses – I suspect we will all be in need of the company of visiting family & friends and the income that sustains our local people and our economy.
The general wellbeing of many, including myself, very much depends on being active, so the coming months could be a real challenge. I am now considering how some of us, whilst following HM Government’s advice, might quietly address some of the littering and dog excrement issues.
Would you be willing to help work through my list of areas in Swanage where there is an abundance of litter? Taking this a stage further, are you are prepared to hoe & sweep pavements?
Despite the very somber headlines, there are also opportunities. I’m sure there are some in social isolation who could still assist at quieter times of day for a few minutes – especially if arrangements are made for the provision of equipment and litter bags collected afterwards.
For now, I’m seeking expressions of interest to gauge if this is a viable proposal; please contact me on swanagelanders@herstoncross.co.uk
I would like to thank Ideal Skip Hire, Moonfleet Cars Ltd, Nixons, Swanage Town Council and Nico at the Gazette for their support over the last month or so. The Great British Spring Clean is now planned for 11th September to 27th September 2020.
